Mon Feb 22nd – Cape Town (Day 2)

Table cloth is still there! The wind is still pretty strong but the cloud cover over Table Mountain has cleared a little so that we can take more photos (as if we didn’t have enough :-)).

Today we head to Aquila Private Vines as far as the eye can see Game Reserve.  It’s a 2.5hr drive to Aquila with absolutely breathtaking views.  We drove through some of the finest South African wine country namely Stellenbosch, Paarl and Robertson.  These wineries are located in a valley surrounded by mountains.  The weather here is hot and dry and is just marvellous for both wine grapes and table grapes.

Nice welcome for us Because we left so early this morning (6:20am) when we arrived at Aquila we were all offered a wonderful full breakfast and sparkling wine, grape juice or water.  Of course we had the sparking wine which we emptied into our orange juice (samosas – we’re thinking of Paul and Leslie here :-)).

Typical 4x4 By 9:30am 9 of us are loaded into the first game vehicle and we’re off.  We decided for this adventure to split up and take different perspective of photos.  As it turned out Pat’s guide was by far the superior and her tour took over 4 hours to complete, while Gerrit’s tour finished early by almost an hour.

We saw the Big 5 along with lots more: Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo, Hippo, Lions & Lionesses,  Cheetah, Leopard, Baboons, Wildebeests; Zebras, Eland, Springbok, giraffe and many more to mention.  Along with a HUGE variety of birds including the gray heron.

Lunch was amazing of course – lots of Afrikaans food.  The people who live in Aquila trace back to the indigenous people and are smaller, stockier and lighter skinned than Cape Towner’s.

It was a very tiring day, but a terrific day nonetheless.  The only down side is that Gerrit has hurt his neck (we think of the constant bouncing of the 4 x 4 trucks).  Our next Safari is scheduled for day after tomorrow and we’re thinking of changing that to a non 4 x 4 truck adventure.

Here is a selection of the 700+ photos we took today, limited by internet time, sorry !!!!!
